Lit Flicks: Short(er) Stories

We escaped the heat, grabbed some of our delicious popcorn, kicked back and chilled out with UCR Palm Desert's summer movie series, Lit Flicks, films based on literary works. Our fourth summer season featured movies based on short literary works, from novellas to a collection of stories. Each FREE screening was followed by a fascinating conversation with UCR Palm Desert Master of Fine Arts Creative Writing and Writing for the Performing Arts director Tod Goldberg and other UCR faculty film and literary experts.

  • Thursday, Sept. 17, Jesus' Son: A 1999 drama, adapted from a collection of short stories by Denis Johnson, which follows the exploits of a troubled, young heroin addict in rural American.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 19  Stand By Me: The story of four boys who go on a hike across the countryside looking for the dead body of a missing child. Based on Stephen King's novella "The Body." 
  • Wednesday, Jul. 15  Breakfast at Tiffany's: This 1961 romantic comedy, based on the novella by Truman Capote, gave us Holly Golightly, "Moon River" and Audrey Hepburn in the ultimate little black Givenchy dress.

  • Jun. 13, 2015 Film Screening: Ride With Larry & Q&A with co-director Ricardo Villareal
    Larry doesn’t just live with Parkinson’s. He rises above it. After a 20-year battle with Parkinson’s, Larry has exhausted every conventional method of treatment, every drug, and even brain surgery. Refusing to give up, he seeks alternatives, discovering the untapped benefits of exercise and medical marijuana.
