A literary arts series

Arts & Letters is a FREE lecture series that invites the community to spend time with some of today's most influential authors through interviews and personal readings. Conversations are facilitated by Tod Goldberg, the program director for UCR Palm Desert's Low-Residency MFA in Creative Writing and Writing for the Performing Arts.

Geoff Dyer, hailed as one of the funniest writers alive, is the author of four novels and seven books of nonfiction, including "But Beautiful," awarded the Somerset Maugham Prize, "Out of Sheer Rage," a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist, and "Otherwise Known as the Human Condition," which won the National Book Critics Circle Award and was a New York Times Top 10 Book of the Year. His latest, "White Sands: Experiences from the Outside World," will be released in May 2016. RSVP

 


Apr. 6, 2016: Jill Alexander Essbaum

Essbaum

Jill Alexander Essbaum is the New York Times bestselling author of "Hausfrau," one of the most acclaimed books of the last decade. Hailed by Time as “Anna Karenina with a side of Madame Bovary,” Hausfrau chronicles the unraveling of Anna Benz, an American living in Zurich. Essbaum is also the celebrated author of several poetry collections, and has twice been named a Fellow of the National Endowment of the Arts.

 

 

Feb. 3, 2016: Colby Buzzell

Colby Buzzell is the author of "My War: Killing Time in Iraq," "Lost In America: A Dead End Journey," and, most recently, "Thank You For Being Expendable & Other Experiences." A frequent commentator on CNN and Al-Jazeera on the conflicts in the Middle East and veteran’s affairs, Buzzell was originally part of a Stryker Brigade Combat Team in Iraq beginning in 2003.

 

 

Nov. 5, 2015: Jillian Lauren

Jillian Lauren
Jillian Lauren has gone from being a member of a harem to a member of the PTA, and she's here to tell the tale. Lauren is the author of the New York Times bestselling memoir, "Some Girls: My Life in a Harem" and the novel, "Pretty." Her latest, "Everything You Ever Wanted," is a heart-wrenching, beautiful memoir of adoption. Her writing has appeared in The Paris Review, The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Los Angeles Magazine and many others.
